| A recently formed Saudi group says officials should be elected to put an end to the “corrupt behavior” of the royal family.
The Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association in a statement on Sunday blasted the Saudi government over a deadly flood in Jeddah on November 25 that killed at least 120 people and caused between 500 million and a billion dollars worth of damage, by some estimates
“The Jeddah flood disaster… has shown that political corruption has resulted in the tragic genocide of innocent residents,” AFP quoted the group as saying in its statement.
“Corrupt behaviors have become the general norm of royal family members; they occupy top government positions, compete to rob public funds and accumulate illegitimate wealth,” the statement said.
The group said that members of the royal family should be limited and provincial governors and parliamentary representatives elected.
Saudi Arabia runs by an absolute monarchy in which officials are appointed and most governors come from the royal family. |
